EN – The study of Palazzo Barberini interiors during the golden age of the decorative arts in Rome between the Seventeenth- and Eighteenth- Century has thus far received rather limited attention from critical literature. Thanks to unpublished documents from the Vatican Apostolic Library, this article analyzes the gilding and decoration works executed by the doratori Angelo and Filippo Clementi inside the palace between 1683 and 1710.
The collaboration with the architects Giovan Battista Contini and Cristoforo Schor, the painters Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari and Francesco Reale and the carver Giovanni de’ Sebastiani Giorgetti highlights the importance of the Clementi among the families of artists and artisans active in Rome, clarifying a moment in the history of the taste in the Barberini’s patronage perspective.
The magnificent interiors of Palazzo Barberini, characterized by a diffuse use of pure gold and elaborate carvings, finally point out the intent of self-representation of the Barberini family’s power.
